Steains Residence

LARGE EAVES: Large Eaves provide important shading from the sun. But they can also create an interesting design effect as well. CLASSIC AUSTRALIAN COUNTRY-STYLE HOME: Where the architecture and environment compliment each other. MODERN STAIRCASE DESIGN: Simple, modern and elegant. SWIMMING POOL FENCING: A custom-design and manufactured glass and timber pool fence. SPOTTED GUM TIMBER FLOORING: Timber flooring against a neutral background can have a very striking effect. FRAMELESS GLASS SHOWER RECESS: Simple, elegant and practical. STAIRCASE LIGHTING: Using lights that compliment the staircase design is critical. BATHROOM VANITY: Stone benchtops with inset sinks, flix-mixer taps, two-pack joinery and stainless steel rail handles.

Melbourne and Geelong-based AMG Architects created a simple, elegant open-plan home in the natural surroundings at Marcus Hill near Queenscliff, Victoria.

The residence, inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright’s prairie-style house designs of the early twentieth century, is broken into two north-facing wings. It is linked via a striking natural limestone hearth that punctuates the horizontal rooflines and creates a prominent architectural statement.

AMG Architects’ clever and interesting building design constantly reinforces the dynamic between outside and inside spaces, drawing one’s eye to the landscape beyond.

The Steains’ Residence represents modern elegance in the Australian landscape at its best.
